these ones keep floors moving! championing an inimitable groove, the possé present three club ready tracks on their season s greetings ep, combining the know-how of house with the energy and spontaneity of a live band set up. recorded at the legendary citisound and rec studios in sydney, the tracks on ken004 each deliver different perceptions of the up-tempo house beat they’re quickly becoming known for. the title track is probably the heaviest delivery from the label to date, highlighted by the iconic drip of the tb-303. cheeky guitar licks and 808 rhythms jump in and out of the tracks on the ep, keeping it fresh on the live tip.

danish composer the swan and the lake is at it again with his trademark widescreen soundscapes wrapped around eight new tracks of exquisite scandinavian balearica. with the release of his first album -moments- last year on copenhagen’s music for dreams, we were introduced to a unique artistic vision. with one foot in the ambient chill out spectrum and the other in everything from classical avantgarde, idm and jazz, the music of emil svane breum under his alias the swan and the lake is both very accessible yet complex. on his new album -clouds- we see him expand on those same ideas and with seemingly simple means achieve extraordinary strong emotions. opening side a, the jazzy intro of -fresh food- leads us into a sublime piece of hazy ambient groover that could easily be mistaken for a lost 80s production from japan. -clouds over Østerbro- keeps things playfully cool and adds elements of scat singing and xylophones, layered over breum’s shimmering bright chords. while the title suggests we are still on danish soil, this feels like a five minute vacation to a tropical paradise. guitarist johan liepstack makes a guest appearance on -summer in december- which comes off as an understated anthem that could break out into euphoria at any second, but manages to stay in a sombre state all the way through. on the track -plastic pacific ocean remake- we are visited once more by airy vangelis-like vocals which assume the role of a nurturing angel, guiding us to a comforting state of relaxation and healing, as breum lays down an overwhelmingly beautiful synth serenade with chords that hit you right at the core of your most vulnerable state. flip over for the mallorca inspired track -port d andratx- which comes in two versions - part 1 (sun) shines like a perfect escape into that cafe del mar/ hostal la torre sunset while the more deep and melancholic part 2 is aptly named rain. the gentle trickling of -waterfalls- sees breum mimic the eternal cycle of water, creating an organic and ethereal composition that stretches out seemingly without beginning or end. and finally on -heaven’s voice- we see breum in his most epic and emotional mood, as he steers us through a slow explosive force of cinematic sounds. it all ends with a heartfelt spoken word contribution by guest vocalist neonbi.

with bjoern torske, skateboard, telephones and last not least the sex tags label all hailing from bergen, the city s not been exactly short on world leading “d.i.s.c.o” , but it s geir hermansen aka velferd that recently cought our ear with his keys. in “the city that drowned” it s unlikely only ever so wet, there s bliss, sun, warmth, heat - all painted bright with skyrocketing masterful synths over very neat and dry bass. great! laid back and somehow dreamy the whole thing catches you by the ear and lingers on but then there s so much dedicated kick and an almost extatic groove in each track - irresistable string hooks made in heaven! “never” and “through the valley” add on to where the title song just left and this give the 3 track ep so much perfectly arranged strength… bergen might well have given birth to another disco standard-bearer.

nastia reigel is the latest artist to join the impressive roster from dustin zahns enemy records. >trust, intimacy< is as dark as it is poetic, delivering a perfect take on contemporary techno. >trust, intimacy< fuses her top tier production skills with her own vocals for a unique and introspective four tracker. nachalo is the perfect intro track while the title track and transformed are destined for peak time madness. the ep closes with the most emotional moment of the ep, acceptance…an ideal closing track that could just as easily lead the entire single.

floorplan delivers two excellent reinterpretations of radio slave ‘feel the same’, the title track from the rekids founder’s forthcoming album. made up of former underground resistance member robert hood and his daughter lyric, the detroit duo needs little introduction and last year saw the release of their illustrious album ‘victorious’ on hood’s m-plant. the first remix of ‘feel the same’ extends to eight minutes long and is a journey, incorporating echoing chords, intricate percussion and a medley of esoteric effects whilst cackling laughter ebbs in and out of the mix. meanwhile, the flip sees a more up front interpretation with its heady hook, rolling drums and energetic claps.

folamour represents the present and future sounds of the disco/house hybrid, staying true to the glitterbox sonic philosophy. his tracks share the same production values as the timeless records from classic disco imprints in the late 70s, melodies are super-tightly harmonised, instrumentation is lively and the rhythms are designed purely for dance. ‘the power and the blessing of unity’ is almost a mini album, exploring all the facets of folamour’s sophisticated house and disco tendencies. the title track sparkles with brass stabs and a textbook swinging disco beat, ‘island of recent father’ breaks things down into synthy house goodness, ‘let’s grab some smokes’ channels a more contemporary low-fi sound and bringing it home with ‘home beyond the clouds’, folamour closes with uplifting house hooks and percussion. it’s a real trip.

the enigmatic label from berlin, schakal recordings is back with its fifth release and young dj lorenz lepus is next in line. the lepus project has gone through many guises, finally lorenz settled on making music as a solo artist under the lorenz lepus alias in 2014. while still studying at school lorenz became a resident at chalet’s tuesday sound department parties, cutting his teeth in the cities clubs he has played in venues including hoppetosse, sisyphos, arena and many more. this dedication to his music was not without some confusion, being aware of the melan- cholic minimal tendencies of his productions he has always been loathe to pin himself to a particular genre.what with the success of his career so far.. perhaps this isn t a bad thing. ‘feral child’ is made up of two original tracks and two remixes.the title track s melody swells until it breaks down into a pulsing and rolling rhythm. ‘lost’ is more immediate in its dance-floor compatibly, maintaining the rolling style lorenz imbues his take on deep house with an emotional poignancy rarely heard. floyd lavine steps up for the first remix on the ep, floyd is a resident at the legendary rise par- ties at watergate, with one foot in berlin and the other in his native cape town floyd delivers a beauti- fully loopy and oddball twist on ‘feral child’ adding crunching static sounds. providing a harder take on ‘feral child’, italies vii circle change the rolling melody into a slow techno heater.

hailing from outer space via reykjavik, volruptus maps out intergalactic forms of communication on ‘alien transmissions’, the latest release from bjarki and johnny chrome silver’s inimitable bbbbbb records. title track is a disorienting dose of acid powered electropunkfunk whilst ‘jargon’ uses complex polyrhythms to propel a grinding techno stomper. ‘gett vffreakye’ uses percussive breaks and mechanised vocal chops to depict aliens having a live jam in outer space, whilst closing track ‘tesseract’ is an angular drum workout featuring animated bass and dissonant pad calls. like each bbbbbb release before it, volruptus presents an intoxicating ep that pairs impeccable sound design with an unruly approach to genre, form and style.

what is there to say about the difference ? this is how it should be done - deep, with soul and conveying a message, house music doesn t get any realer, any purer. logic, a collaborative effort between wayne gardiner, roger sanchez, vivian sessoms and eddie maduro unleashed this monolithic slab of music on the world in 1990. truly streets ahead this record helped carve a new sound, a new feeling in dance music. oozing with human emotion and feeling the difference is one of those records that honestly warrants the title of classic . it s b side i got somethin is a slinky, late night groove that recalls smoky, sweaty dance-floors and is all the better for it, this is the real deal for real. yet another solid, essential release from the mighty strictly rhythm vaults, sounding as important, fresh and incredible as it did on it s initial release. house music history brought back into view for lucky ears and feet in 2017. the difference has been skilfully remastered from all original master sources and fully licensed and reissued officially for 2017.

omer joins the love on the rocks family with a massive underground smash, the not-so-well-kept secret rework thats been doing the rounds recently among a handful of trusted djs, inducing hands-in-the-air hysteria and clocking up more than a few plays in clubs from robert johnson to panorama bar. finally it lands here as the title track of the ep, perfectly tooled for any poolside dance party. phew! finding just enough room for another huge jam to share the same side, omer moves effortlessly into his trademark late night melancholic trip territory with high hopes, leading in with snapping percussion before giving way to a fierce bassline, swirling layers of melody and synths that resonate with warmth and emotion. rounding out the proceedings, back and forth pulses with electric energy from the word go, quickly pulling you into its distinctly neon after-dark atmospherics, with a forboding hook that twists around itself amid spiralling tension, and on into euphoria. you and me to the party, you and me all night. you and me to the party,you and me all night.

with further announcements forthcoming with life and death later this summer, drug dilling offers up the first new material from the/das on the label since 2013s outfashioned. now as a duo, fabian fenk and philipp kollers latest ep is the result of playful and pure studio sessions, during which they aimed to capture the often-overlooked club-friendly side of their project. top vibes breakbeats come as a welcomed surprise, while holy rollers pairs wobbling synth pads with a vocal cameo by dj tennis. the standout title-track recalls hazy afterparty moments. detroit stalwart dj bone delivers a focused reinterpretation on the flip, backing expertly-sampled organ takes and flanged vocal lines in an enticing bed of afro-cuban rhythms.

time for a little neck bulging, slimy skin hip-slinking summer fun as a true craftsman steps from the studio shadows: jay shepheard, who’s back with a track that’s so infectious if you licked its back you’d trip for weeks. prepare yourselves for ‘bullfrogging’: wry funk, warmth and humanised technoid soul. taking a vocal texture then processing, harmonising and splicing the spawn out of it, jay’s precision balance of electronic hustle and anthromorphised action has all the hallmarks for a summer anthem. ‘early doors’ follows suit and there’s a massive clue in the title… soft-focused, warm, rolling and laced with textured chimes, it’s definitely tailored for those key transitions between warm-up and second gear. deep, trippy but coded with a hookiness that grabs rather than soothes, once again it’s classic shepheard but with a revitalised 2017 twist. hey, he didn’t lock himself away in the studio for twelve months for nothing, right? neither did jay’s long-time friend and neighbour mark henning, a man who hasn’t taken on a remix since the early 2010s. his return to the remix game is as poignant and powerful as jay’s return to releases as he removes around 70 percent of the frog and maximises the bullishness of the elements, creating a relentless tribal slammer of a version that still retains the warmth and soul of jay’s original. two returns to action, three killer tracks, one label you can always count on as your friend and no frogs harmed during the whole process. we’re pulling out some serious stops here.

the album attains a unique harmony while drawing from a myriad of beliefs and practices. syncretism appears not only in the name but in the artwork and the music itself. the independent tonal passages draw on aspects of varied genres while creating a remarkably coherent yet homogeneous work. lvis mejía explores in his second album, topics of the christian religion and the history of man. deftly placed style and tempo contrasts express the various antagonisms found in this discourse. with the use of contemporary music in combination with hints of jazz, mejía designs spherical soundscapes, therefore allowing for musical deformations, hence the title aforma. the result is an experience that evokes abstract musical impressions. a reference to christianity is also embedded in the track order as the first piece patefactio opens the musical event much like a christian mass. the travel proceeds through the lurking clerical chants of aeternus-the final trial, whilst the bells are then calling us to mass with the track in dissonata apocalypse and continuing with the ontological concept of belief in in ghost we trust. everything comes full circle with the history of homo errata as a conglomerate of human errors. this final piece serves also as a link to the second part of the album anthropology of amnesia a musical description of repression and forgetting as a condition of life, which has emerged as a theme of human existence since the beginning of recorded history. with this opening piece artist and musician lvis mejía has created a magical musical experience, leaving us eager for its sequel.

nyc based producer and head honcho of the (in)famous, wall of fame, label, makes the trek to texas for whiskey pickle records third shot on their new minted vinyl series. his groovy brand of sampled house and disco has leant classy tracks to many a release on his home turf, but its rare that the beat smith venture into uncharted territories with his prized compositions. the folks at whiskey pickle must have liqoured up the ole boy up in order to finagle such a delightful ep out of him, and thankfully, us boppers are to benefit! water, the a1 opener kicks off with some chunky drums and an uptempo chug as layers of percussion and dancefloor onomonpea s create a bed for the piano driven groove to unfold... a scorcher! move inward for dont wanna be and the tempo drops dramatically. a hypnotic, looped beat gets a syrupy bass riff and cavernous funk-claps until the gorgeous, mono-synth lines appear and carry us to utter ecstasy! flip it over for moods, a track that is as lovely and emotional as it s title suggests. the vibes sampling and superlative drum programming create an exceptional, dreamy frame work for the groover... perfect for opening sets or a much needed, dancefloor breather. lastly, your dance snips some familiar territory into a perfect energy builder with beefed up muscles, perfect for modern heads. watch out for the mighty horn stabs and flanger flourishes, they re gonna prove to be deadly!

south africas escapism refuge returns to londons smokin sessions with the on the fence ep, following his previous effort for the label the highly acclaimed vol. 31. a-side and title track on the fence is an understated and subtle effort, carrying with it an introspective and moody set of harmonies and chord progressions. its a quietly uplifting start to the ep, and the tracks lead melody will remain stuck in your head for days. the b1, almost eight does things differently by incorporating elements of classic ruff sqwad-era grime with an updated and crisp set of modern day production techniques. the ep’s last track, dust, uses a deep and propulsive bass line, which is augmented by escapisms now signature use of fleeting vocal samples. its a powerful ending to a heavyweight and emotionally-charged ep from escapism refuge. escapism refuges previous efforts have gained impressive dj support from across the scene, from figures such as compa (deep medi), synkro, gilles peterson, lefto, joe kay (soulection), don letts, tim parker, n- type, phaeleh and many more.

london star alexis raphael returns to hot creations with the dance floor killer it’s kinda jazzy, with fine french exports dan ghenacia and chris carrier teaming up to deliver the remix with electrifying results. title track it’s kinda jazzy is an ultimate peak time weapon. alexis explains how its a real melting pot of different musical influences that have inspired me over the years. there s everything from hip-hop to 90 s uk house and garage, jungle/drum and bass, upfront house and techno and, of course, jazz. on the flip dan ghenacia and chris carrier deliver a solid remix that keeps the pace, changing gear through trippy turns. last up, second original track strip off lays down the swing with sultry vocal slices. an influential player on the london scene, alexis raphael earned his stripes across the pirate radio stations of north and east london during the late 90s and early 00s and went on to hold residencies at legendary london clubs the cross and bagley’s. his first release spaceship was picked up by hot creations sub-label hot waves in 2011. since then, he’s had numerous releases and remixes on labels including jackathon jams, of unsound mind, avotre and get physical and not forgetting his anthem, i know. dan ghenacia is the undisputed kingpin of the paris underground scene, having founded and ran freak n’chic for seven years and now one of the three creative minds behind new label and b2b2b dj outfit apollonia. chris carrier is another heavy-weight from the french underground scene. together they have delivered some recent killer ep’s on appolonia, music for freaks and adult only.

second 12 off the -from night to night- lp features the charming slow jam - put the love in it. a finely crafted pop pysche tune that sounds like it could have come straight off a ppu reissue rounded off with sax and woodwinds from ben castle. reaching into his bag of unreleased bits, the tempo gets upped on the vocoder boogie bounce sound of -let the freak come out at night- and peaking lights aaron coyes is on hand for remix duties to complete the 12 adding his brand of cosmic west coast dub-kraut-groove to really space the title track out.

this four tracker definitely shows off “new directions” for the mole – nothing too outlandish mind you, but the path he chose with the title and crowd favourite “gelb grun blau” definitely has these tracks leaning towards the centre of a dj sets vs. beginning or end…spiralling kick drums with a fine grind blend of digital synths, analog synths, drum machines and the occasional samples here. vape-house anyone?
the closer “back in the studio game” is a beatless one created just for the sunrises of your life.

for over ten years, até has been fine-tuning his craft in his studio in antwerp. together with his partner he founded the athea label as an output for his music and his partners visual works. athea releases are limited to 300, hand stamped copies.
title track ‘guardian angel’ is a drum-oriented stomper, with até’s beloved alpha juno all over it. ‘dark days’ conveys images of dystopian winters with endless nights trough deep strings, resonant bass lines and garage infused drums. closing off the ep is ‘deejay d’, a hissy and fragile electronica jam to warm up your broken heart, bringing you comfort and solace in even the darkest of days.

two years on from their move to berlin, british brothers alex & digby return with a 10 track, triple lp album to their home imprint flash as a rat on the 19 june. the album is said to show the duos full commitment to sound and experimentation after being written during a very personal time to them both. the album title -for my process” echoes this. coming form a engineering background as well as being know for their modular wizardry and band based upbringing, expect band psychedelia with dance sensibility.

tobias bernstrup is a contemporary musician and video artist born 1970 in gothenburg, sweden. he received an mfa from royal college university of fine arts stockholm in 1998. using the visual language of pop culture, video games, sci-fi, classicism and gothic noir, he has created a stage persona with notorious live performances. dressed in elaborate costumes of skin-tight rubber suits and fetish gear, tobias’ external appearance is androgynous. he raises questions about representation of identity, the body and physical space in both virtual and non-virtual realities. between 1997 and 1998 he self-released two limited cd-r eps. in 2002 his debut album ‘re-animate me’ was released by tonight records followed by two limited 12” singles for the song “27” and the italian version “ventisette”.
“27” is a 5-song ep collecting 4 different mixes of the title track plus one unreleased song from the ‘re-animate me’ recording sessions. the material on this ep is closely connected with the world of computer games which bernstrup also inhabits.

beautiful deep house by label boss tyson ballard. tyson has covered all grounds on his latest ep - feel like i feel. *charges* begins the experience as a slow jam with the essence of uku kuut or moon b. the title track is an euphoric journey of lost love with long time friend sheff providing hypnotic vocals and linkwood giving his master stroke on the rhodes, creating a highly charged emotionally intense atmosphere. *all night* starts gearing towards the early morning hours vibe following into *all day* which rounds out the ep with a perfect powerhouse. nice!

lyon-based beatsmith ethyène has patented a certain style of mid-tempo house music applying a french touch aesthetic to disco, r&b and hip-hop sample references. through releases on longtime underground favorite kolour ltd and upstart labels like kyoku, as well as contributions to his own moonrise hill material, the frenchman has quickly built a sought after discography. his collaboration with better listen comes at an interesting time, as he seems to really be refining his sound, maturing sonically and honing the synthesis of the aforementioned influences to something nicely unique. the playin with fire ep is a deliciously bittersweet four track affair. the a1 slot sees e joining forces with his homie, the much acclaimed folamour, for the superlative why my love. meanwhile, loneliness of the shadow dancer- continues the r&b cream vibes, combining a classic head-nodding hip-hop flip with a soul chorus. the b-side gets a bit moodier, with the title track climatically building on hypnotically deep riffs and vocals and i sold yayo to buy kicks serving as the bob james-esque closer. the package is a cohesive reflection of a pensive and slightly anguished mindstate, with boom bap cultural influences and his familiar philadelphia streets functioning as the canvas. dont be surprised if this record serves as a point of stylistic elevation for the young producer, with plenty more of this new ammunition in the chamber. and you know the saying: if you play with fire, you might turn into a scorching hot phoenix.

there is enough brilliance to choose from, but it all starts with 15 minutes of superiority on the 5x3 loop tracks on the a-side with that typical sleeparchive sound. all containing disturbing drums followed by upperclass sequences which keeps on going.
the b-side starts with title track letter of resignation. is this a clue from sleeparchive? the future will tell. what we do know is that it continues where the a-side stopped. again heavy hitting drums followed by a frisk sequence. he continues this formula on the 2nd track called solitary drinker. and above all we give you a small bonus with 2 locked groove presents: sleep cycle 17 & 18.

conrad van orton debuts on attic music for the 15th installment of label. “hypersomnia” is a collection of haunting techno tracks that sit on the darker side of the genre’s spectrum without loosing it’s dance floor appeal.
the 4 track spanning record opens up with the title track “hypersomnia” though techno sounds that revolve around a train-like whistle that repeats throughout the track’s poignantbuild. “green eyes” is an intrusive piece of work that closes down the a-side with it’s intense synth works. on the b side we find “iteration”. this growling piece of music has an almost live sounding quality to it. “ending point” is the toughest piece of work of the record which revolves around a fierce bass sound and a potent drum work.

ed davenport continues his full-spectrum techno experiments as inland with an elegant new ep on counterchange entitled coriolis. the title track coriolis is a moody 10 minute voyage with a morphing synth array at its core - bright, detuned stabs are layered upon tough rhythmic foundations. the jagged metallic lead builds, unearthing harmonic bleep accents and syncopated fx swells, before folding in on itself leaving the effective tribal drum section to ride on. d10d3 plows forward with an urgent staccato sequence, segueing into italo-horror filter sweeps and noise-laden moments of drama. finally tsereteli is a more reduced modern dub study, continuing ed s long running fascination with tranced-out time stretching and after-hours vibes. the 9th release on the label, the record features cover art by uk artist guy archard and is pressed on 180g vinyl.

techno stars collide as truncate and slam come together for the latest gynoid release “drum trax”. side a sees truncate return on the label with 2 original pieces in model 2 and the title track, “drum trax”. both dipped in that truncate signature floor driven minimalist funk and backed with tough percussion for drive. these are surefire dj faves waiting to happen. the flip side sees slam remix “model 2”, not once but twice. the slam remix charts darker and brooding territory, taking you deep into the rabbit hole. then the tenebris dub remix still maintains that mood, but shifts through the energy gears to develop into a dance floor bomb.

one of the sweetest and most idiosyncratic voices in reggae, tenor singer cornell campbell also has one of the longest-running careers of any jamaican recording artist. taken under studio one founder clement sir coxsone dodd’s wing at a very young age, cornell cut his first recordings in 1956, long before ska was even established. he remained based at studio one for many years (working as a label printer as well as a recording artist), and also voiced sides for king edwards in the ska years. he then briefly joined the sensations in rock steady and recorded at treasure isle, before moving back to studio one as leader of the eternals when reggae arrived, cutting huge hits there such as stars and queen of the mistrel, and giving early coaching to slim smith, jacob miller and bassist robbie shakespeare. joining forces with ace producer bunny striker lee in the mid-1970s brought a dramatic new surge in popularity that greatly boosted his profile overseas. the ropin lp was issued on third worlds justice subsidiary in 1980 a sub label set up to handle strikers product in the uk (though hits like mash you down and the title track had been handled in jamaica by joe gibbs). one of the albums outstanding moments is bandulu, an anti-rude boy epic voiced on the late night blues rhythm, while opening cover, just my imagination, has an uncredited toasting portion from errol scorcher.

jesse bru’s release on slivers invokes early edit based house with a number of tracks both for the head and dancefloor alike. similar to bru’s eclectic and expansive releases as of late, ‘giving me the feels’, as the title suggests, focuses on a focus on soulful sounds that has become his signature.

fouk are finally back on heist after their great ‘kill frenzy’ ep in 2014 and have taken mount liberation unlimited along for a remix. we’ve been waiting patiently for new material, challenging the guys to take the signature ‘fouk’ sound to the next level. fouk’s brilliance has been obvious on recent work for their own label outplay and razor ‘n tape, as well as their respective solo projects. we’ve kept a close connection, teaming up whenever possible for heist showcases, with highlights in amsterdam’s “claire” and paris’ “concrete-. seeing their work and enthusiasm made it abundantly clear that it would only be a matter of time before they’d show us what the next step would look -or better yet- sound like. anticipation ran high but boy, do fouk deliver. the excellent ‘with lasers’ ep still very much portrays their own style of loose, live percussion and many layers of funk, but they’ve expanded their vision and even toughened up a bit. their new taste for grit and an interest in the heavier side of funk is probably most evident on the opener ‘f3000&#8242,,,,,, where a thunderous arpeggio is supported by distorted drums and lush cosmic synth stabs. title track ‘with lasers’ is more of a classic fouk track, combining a lovely walking disco bassline and their signature drum programming with… erm… lasers. lots of them. the b side ‘see you on the other side’ sets a different pace, carefully blending guitar licks, rhodesy chords and vocal chops into a lovely groove that feels just as carefree and improvised as it feels exciting. swedish synth nerds “mount liberation unlimited” ran with it and transformed it into a dreamy -pepe bradock goes balearic- track where airy echoed guitars take turns with some equally dreamy and evocative pads.

former half of the defunct pitch & hold duo under the banner of which he operated from 2006 to 2011, simon halsberghe steps up on brussels’ very own vlek with his debut solo ep as simon hold. first heard on vlek s 2016 mix for resident advisor as they were appointed label of the month by the high­ranking platform last autumn, maqam bruxelloise reflects the wide­angle beauty and compelling diversity of the belgian capital and its throbbing heart, a city at the confluence of cultures and languages. across a finely­layered interplay of synthetic modulations and intricate polyrhythms, hold lays out a riveting kaleidoscope of pattern­welded textures and prismatic synth motifs played and arranged accordingly to a contemporary interpretation of the traditional arabic maqam system of improvisation the track draws its title from. an ode to brussels all­embracing effervescence. translating as -soft drone- or -pleasant noise-, the gritty dhajij doux then welcomes you into a more disquieting, bipolar audio scenario that evokes the reality of living -in a sometimes difficult and hostile city-. a curiously matching negative of the opener, in this that it taps into the same generous and plural matrix universe as main source of inspiration, but eventually opens on a more nuanced outcome, here hold clearly shows a further abrasive facet of his work: harsh and vibrant, the track may be replete with a lead­heavy amalgam of sizzling bass and jagged drumwork thrown into the furnace, light and hope still manage threading their way through dark clouds and turbulence, slowly but surely turning this rough­hewn stone into a truly haunting gem.

moniquea established herself as one of the foremost female artists in the modern funk scene with her 2014 mofunk records debut album yes no maybe. for her followup, she continues exploring and expanding upon the boogie/modern soul sound of her debut, and at the same time, ventures bravely into a new sound inspired by the new wave and synthpop sounds of the 80’s. thus, the album title: blackwavefunk.

owen jay and melchior sultana are frequently found working in tandem on their particular brand of contemporary deep house, and this is the second time they ve been snapped up by contrast wax following the aftermath ep back in 2014. the mood is smooth and sultry on the title track for this new 12inch, with a sensual sax lead taking centre stage over the kind of gentle bump that would sit comfortably on guidance recordings. bubbles floating in the sky, as the title would suggest, is an equally mellow mover, while b-side lounger saturn heads into even calmer waters with its hushed pad tones and technoid synth pulses.

italian artist paul santangelo has been having fun messing with the sometimes po-faced traditions of the house music scene through a raft of home made productions on soundcloud, but now with his venetian causeway label hes able to prove the clout to be found in his music. on this 10inch the arch title generic house traxx actually does a disservice to the quality of the music contained within santangelo does a fine job of whipping up monosynth bass and ethereal pads astride an uptempo beat that, while familiar, has an atmosphere with considerable depth to it. please him on the b side goes further out on a mellow electro tip, plaintive leads and aqueous chords flirting with 808-style beats.
